This study investigates how role models influence the career and identity construction of Finnish adolescent student-athletes. Using narrative inquiry, the authors analyzed interviews with 18 elite youth athletes, identifying five key role model types: elite athletes, multifaceted athlete-heroes, relatable achievers, mentors, and caring family members. The research reveals gendered patterns: young men often admired distant, high-profile athletes, while young women favored mentors and relatable figures with shared life paths. The study concludes that having diverse, realistic role models supports youth in forming multifaceted identities and highlights the value of integrating role model reflection into athlete career counseling.
