A Grounded Theory of Dual Career Pathways in Sport
Description
This study explores the experiences and outcomes of athletes who pursue both sports and education or vocational careers, commonly referred to as dual careers (DC). Using grounded theory, the researchers conducted life-story interviews with 17 athletes to understand how they manage these dual paths. The analysis revealed three main development pathways: a sport-focused path, an education/vocation-focused path, and a balanced dual career path. Each pathway was illustrated through vignettes, and the study discusses the practical outcomes and implications of each. The resulting theory offers a framework to guide future research and support for athletes managing dual careers.
