A case for change in how we refer to dual career athletes a person first approach
Description
This study delves into the realm of Dual Career Athletes (DCA) by advocating for a shift towards a person-first approach, emphasizing individuals as "person(s) engaging in dual career (PEDC)". Drawing on social identity theory (SIT) and self-categorization theory (SCT), the research explores the impact of labels and stereotypes on PEDCs’ identity, wellbeing, and overall experiences in both sporting and educational domains. By proposing a change in terminology to PEDC, this paper not only contributes to a more inclusive and supportive environment for dual career athletes but also highlights the importance of addressing stereotypes, identity development, and wellbeing in sports management and educational settings.
