2015 - Australians swimmers transition from sport to retirement
Description
This article examines the post-retirement transition of two elite Australian swimmers, Ian Thorpe and Grant Hackett, through an analysis of Australian media coverage. It reveals how the media predominantly portrays them with a singular athlete identity, even years after retirement, overlooking other roles they may assume. The study shows how transition difficulties are framed as personal failings, minimizing the broader socio-cultural influences. It argues for a more holistic understanding of athlete identity and well-being that includes cultural context and systemic factors.
