The document explores how athletes navigate dual careers (DC) in sports and education or vocational development. Using a grounded theory approach, the research categorizes DC experiences into three distinct pathways: sporting pathway, where athletes prioritize sports over education or work; educational/vocational pathway, where career or academic goals take precedence over sports; and dual career pathway, where individuals successfully balance both. The study highlights the challenges of managing dual careers, emphasizing the importance of institutional and social support in maintaining a balanced pathway. It also introduces the concept of "gaps"—educational, vocational, and sporting gaps—that arise when an athlete’s chosen path does not align with their future career needs. The findings offer insights for policymakers, sports organizations, and educational institutions to better support athletes in long-term career planning and successful transitions.
