A taxonomy of dual career development environments in European countries
Description
This study explores the growing importance of environmental factors in supporting athletes pursuing dual careers in sport and education or work. Conducted across seven European countries, it identifies and classifies eight types of Dual Career Development Environments (DCDEs), including sport-friendly schools, elite sport institutions, universities, and professional clubs. Using document analysis, stakeholder interviews, and cross-country comparisons, the research provides a framework for understanding how different environments support dual careers. The findings offer practical guidance for developing national strategies and improving support systems for dual career athletes.
