2015 - The role of entourage in athletes_ dual career
Description
This study explores the role of an athlete’s entourage—comprising parents, coaches, tutors, and sport psychologists—in supporting adolescent athletes pursuing dual careers in sport and education. Using a multiple case study approach across five elite sports environments in the UK, it identifies key mechanisms through which entourages provide support. These include flexible requirements, strong communication, prioritizing education, and tailored guidance. The research highlights the necessity for integrated and proactive support from both the educational and sporting systems to help athletes succeed in both domains. The findings emphasize the critical importance of social support in facilitating dual career pathways.
